A victory for children’s rights

After a French court acquitted a 30-year-old man of child rape after he had sexual relations with an 11-year-old, the public was outraged and rightly so. 
 
The judge ruled that unless it could be proven that he had used force or intimidation, it was not rape but sexual assault of a child and he could be sentenced to a much lesser penalty.

Nigerians demand release of student who won’t renounce faith

LAGOS (CNS): While Catholic and Muslim leaders welcomed the release of 104 schoolgirls captured by Boko Haram, they urged the government to work for the release of the remaining girl, a Christian who reportedly refused to denounce her faith. 
 
The schoolgirls, who were kidnapped on February 19, were released on March 21. Five of them were killed during captivity.

Brazilian bishop charged with stealing from diocesan donations

BRASILIA (CNS): Bishop Jose Ronaldo Ribeiro of Formosa, Brazil, was arrested and charged, along with four diocesan priests, of stealing about $4.75 million of diocesan money.
 
On March 21, two days after the arrest, Pope Francis named Archbishop Paulo Mendes Peixoto of Uberaba, to serve as apostolic administrator of the diocese. The pope did not remove Bishop Ribeiro from his post.
