Rights group calls for release of Protestant pastor

HONG KONG (UCAN): Human Rights Watch called on Chinese authorities to immediately release Pastor Wang Yi and scores of members of the Early Rain Covenant Church, in the southwestern city of Chengdu in Sichuan province.
 
On December 9 and 10, police in Chengdu arrested Pastor Wang Yi and more than 100 member of the Protestant Church which is not registered with the government.

In 2018, the Vatican finally signed its long desired deal with China’s ruling Communist Party on the appointment of bishops, yet it did so in a year when Beijing significantly escalated its religious persecution.

HONG KONG (SE): Father Alfred Deignan of the Society of Jesus died in the early hours of December 11 at St. Paul’s Hospital, Causeway Bay, Hong Kong. He was 91-years-old.
 
Father Deignan was born in Mullagh, County Cavan, Ireland, on 25 March 1927.  He entered the society at Emo Park, Portlaoise, Laoise, on 7 September 1945 and was ordained to the priesthood on 31 July 1959 in Dublin. He professed his final vows on 5 November 1977 at Ricci Hall, where he was...
