2013 Lunar New Year message from the Colloquium of Six Religious Leaders of Hong Kong

May the New Year of the Snake bring wholeness and blessings to all. The Colloquium of Six Religious Leaders cordially offers to our mother country prayers for her prosperity, social progress and breakthrough scientific achievements.

We also pray for social harmony and stable livelihood for the people of Hong Kong. The New Year is an opportune time for reviewing the past and planning for the future.

The fiscal cliff crisis in the United States of America in the year just ended continues to have a grave impact on the world economy. Fortunately for Hong Kong, our finances remain sound. But there is no room for complacency and all citizens of Hong Kong must work in unison with the administration to stay above the current crisis.

The administration should aspire to be equitable in its governance and the people should be realistic in their expectations, bearing in mind the financial straits of various countries with a high degree of welfare.

Presently, the unbridled escalations in our property prices and rentals are inflicting serious blows to our people’s livelihoods. We truly believe that the administration is paying very close attention to this and that effective measures to tackle the issues will be found.

We in the religious sector are concerned that priority should also be given to offering an upgraded education to our people. We believe that an education anchored in the national cultural virtues of decorum, charity, integrity, honour and fairness will provide guidance for the healthy development of our citizenry, and will foster the establishment of a more lasting administrative governance and more enduring stability in society.

The religious sector remains committed to following its calling to purify the human heart and soul, and to encouraging all men and women to become deliberate, discerning, caring and responsible persons, as well as to helping to bring about a happy and harmonious society.

Once again the Colloquium of Six Religious Leaders sincerely extends to everyone in Hong Kong warm wishes for happiness and fulfillment in the New Year.
