Fresh initiatives call people back to church

WENZHOU (SE): Witness to faith, a retreat, offering the opportunity to receive the sacrament of reconciliation are just some of many initiatives undertaken by Wenzhou diocese, in Zhejiang province, China, to make this Lenten season during the present Year of the Faith a fruitful one for the people.

Articles posted on the diocesan website on February 13 and 14 said that the cathedral parish hosted a two-day Lenten retreat on the theme Consolidating the faith and proclaiming the gospel.

During the retreat, besides reflecting together on the faith, the local people, priests and religious recited the rosary, took part in the way of the cross and celebrated Mass, as well as sharing testimonies about their faith lives and ways of marking the Year of the Faith.

The diocese did something that is unusual in the area, inviting visiting confessors to come at the end of the two-day retreat during the Lunar New Year holiday.

On February 15, a group of 11 priests visited Le Qing and heard about 2,000 confessions.

This initiative led many people who had not been near the church in a long time to return.

The diocese was organising another visiting confessors day for the end of February to be held in a parish which at the time of writing had not been named.
