Farewell to last secretly ordained bishop in the Ukraine

WARSAW (CNS): Bishop Julian Voronovsky, retired head of the Sambir-Drohobych Eparchy, the last Ukrainian Catholic bishop to have been secretly ordained during the Soviet-era persecution of the Church, died on February 28. He was 76-years-old.

During a March 4 memorial service at the Transfiguration Church in Drohobych, Bishop Bohdan Dziurakh, the auxiliary from Kiev, said, “We thank God for this spiritual giant, a man of great heart and heroic faith.”

Speaking to some 300 clergy and hundreds of people, the secretary of the Synod of the Ukrainian Catholic Church, said that Bishop Voronovsky served the Church when it was “humiliated, shattered and driven to Golgotha,” and in doing so had earned the title, confessor of the faith, by ministering in the catacombs.

As leader of the eparchy from 1994 to 2011, Bishop Voronovsky restored parishes, founded monasteries and schools, and dedicated a seminary and catechetical centre in an effort to rebuild the Ukrainian Catholic Church after it had been outlawed and forced, under Soviet rule, to merge with the Russian Orthodox Church in 1946.......
