Pope Francis names his first bishop

MANILA (Agencies): The first episcopal appointment of Pope Francis was announced on April 8. 

The honour goes to Bishop Reynaldo Evangelista from The Philippines. Currently the bishop of Boac, he has now become the bishop on Imus, in Cavite, which was vacated when Asia’s bet for pope, Luis Cardinal Tagle, was moved to Manila in December 2011.

CBCP News reports that he is from San Jose in Batangas. Bishop Evangelista was ordained at the age of 26 in June 1986. He was appointed a bishop in December 2004 by Pope John Paul II.

The 52-year-old bishop is currently a member of the Permanent Council of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of The Philippines, chairs the Commission on Vocations and is a member of the Commission on Seminaries.
