Sisters of the Precious Blood hold chapter

HONG KONG (SE): Thirty-six delegates came together for the 23rd General Chapter of the local Hong Kong diocesan congregation of the Sisters of the Precious Blood and were scheduled to elect a new leadership team on July 31.

Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan were all represented at the chapter, which began with a retreat guided by Father Augustine Tang sj between July 21 and 28 at the congregation’s generalate in Fanling in Hong Kong’s New Territories.

Father Tang was invited to address the theme, To know Jesus Christ from St. John’s Gospel.

A preparatory committee was set up one year ago to help individual sisters and the congregation as a whole to reflect on their charism, the three vows, community life and apostolic work.

The sisters took part in discussions, as well as participating in questionnaires to give feedback to the whole congregation about the new challenges they face in today’s world.

They also reflected on the spirit of the congregation and studied how to make the mission of their vocation of prayer, community religious life and work a reality.

Members of a preparatory committee visited the bishops and priests of Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan to gather their opinions in order to help them draft a working document for the general chapter on the theme of The heritage of our congregation—re-think and re-create.

July 30 was designated as a day of prayer in preparation for the election of a new leadership team on the following day. It was scheduled to begin with a Mass of the Holy Spirit celebrated by the bishop of Hong Kong, John Cardinal Tong Hon, and Father Edward Khong Kin-cheung.

The chapter will vote for a superior general and councillors. The General Chapter will officially close on August 12.

Father Pierre Lam Minh, one of the vicars general in the diocese of Hong Kong, has been invited to celebrate a Thanksgiving Mass at the conclusion of this sacred time in the life of the congregation.

The Congregation of the Precious Blood recently celebrated the 90th anniversary of its foundation.

The sisters hope that under the guidance of the Holy Spirit the celebration of the anniversary may bring a reawakening in the life of the congregation and generate a renewed spirit among its members.

The fact that the anniversary coincides with the special moment of grace provided by the congregational chapter is a challenge to return to the task of discerning how to promote the outstanding value of the religious life, uphold the spirit inherited from the congregational founder and the sisters who have laboured to bequeath the spirit of the congregation.

The prayer of the chapter is that all the sisters may walk side by side with Christ towards a new milestone in their history and the opening of a new era of religious life.
