The Precious Blood Sisters elect new leadership team

HONG KONG (SE): The only locally-founded congregation in Hong Kong, the Precious Blood Sisters, elected a new leadership team at the end of its 23rd General Chapter on July 31, at the congregational headquarters in Fanling in the New Territories.

The bishop of Hong Kong, John Cardinal Tong Hon, presided over the election, with the assistance of Father Edward Khong Kin-cheung.

Sister Madeleine Kwong Lai-kuen was elected as superior general and Sister Agnes Au Yee-man as assistant superior general.

Sister Miriam Lui Yuet-ming, Sister Josephine Kam Lai-ching, Sister Cecilia Yeung Kwai-fong, Sister Cecilia Kwok Yuen-han and Sister Bernadette Yuen Wai-wan became the new councillors general.

The election was preceded by a Mass of the Holy Spirit celebrated by Cardinal Tong and Father Khong.

The cardinal advised the sisters that in their planning prior to and discussions during the General Chapter, that attention should be given to the intensification of the spirituality of the congregation.

He added that a particular focus should be placed on ways and means of encountering the world as a community.

At the same time, he asked the delegates at the chapter to remember that the interest of the Church should be foremost in their minds and be considered ahead of personal, as well as congregational interests.

Sister Kwong, the new superior general, received a bachelor’s degree from the Faculty of Theology of St. Robert Bellarmine at Fu Jen University in Taiwan in 1989.

Then, in 1999, she completed her doctorate in theology at the Jesuit School of Theology in Paris, France.

She has been teaching theology at the Holy Spirit Seminary College in Aberdeen, Hong Kong.

In 1989, Sister Au was awarded a bachelor’s degree in education by Concordia University in Canada and, in 2000, completed her masters in education at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

From 1985 to 1992, she was engaged in mission work among the Chinese Catholic community in Montreal, Canada, and from 1992 to 2012 she filled the position of principal at the Precious Blood Secondary School.


During the 2012 to 2013 academic year, she took refresher courses at St. Paul’s University in Ottawa, Canada.
