Canossian Sisters celebrate a provincial chapter

HONG KONG (SE): The Canossian Sisters in Hong Kong and Macau held a provincial chapter between August 15 and 25 under the theme, Look and do likewise… that the world may believe—called to be joyful and prophetic witnesses.

The provincial chapter this year also served as the first phase for the local province to prepare to participate in the worldwide general chapter of the Canossian Daughters of Charity, which will be held in Rome in April next year.

John Cardinal Tong Hon was invited to address all the sisters of the province and to celebrate a Mass of the Holy Spirit on the opening day of the chapter.

He encouraged them to continue their life of contemplation and imitation of Christ crucified.

He said that by keeping the diocese and the universal Church at the forefront of their reflection and planning, the sisters can make a significant contribution to the work of the diocese in its role as a bridge Church between China and the universal Church.

He added that deepening their understanding of Chinese culture is also important, as this is fundamental to the work of building bridges.

The provincial chapter was inaugurated by Sister Cynthia Chan, the provincial superior.

The facilitator for the chapter, De La Salle Brother John D’Cruz, from Malaysia, used what he termed a process-approach method during discussions at the meeting, which the delegates found most helpful.

Sister Chan opened the chapter with a report on the activities of the province over the six years that have elapsed since the last chapter.

This was followed by reports from the committees and teams responsible for the various apostolic activities and services performed by the community in Hong Kong in the past six years.

The four members of the provincial council, together with 15 elected delegates evaluated different aspects of religious life and made suggestions regarding the reorientation of some aspects of province life over the coming six years.

On August 20, after a day of recollection, the chapter members elected two delegates to next year’s general chapter in Rome, Sister Regina But and Sister Lucy Choy.

This first phase of the chapter concluded with a Eucharistic celebration with Father Pierre Lam Minh, one of the vicars general of the diocese on August 25.

He reminded the sisters there are no short-cuts. He also warned against acting on impulse and being over curious about matters not related to our lives.

Father Lam concluded the Eucharistic celebration by quoting the words of Pope Francis, “Go and serve. Do not be afraid.”
