Seminary in Xingtai has record intake

XINGTAI (SE): Father Zhang Jican, the rector of the seminary in Xingtai in Hebei province of mainland China, has set his sights on developing a spirituality centred on the Eucharist and the sacrament of reconciliation among his students preparing of priesthood.

He told the 70 seminarians enrolled at the institute at the opening of the new academic year on September 1 that the two sacraments would become the focus of life on campus, Fides reported.

The Rome-based news agency says that the seminary can boast an intake of 30 new students in this academic year, which members of the staff say is the largest group in recent years.

“We are living in such a chaotic and tumultuous world that leads us to neglect the authentic inner needs,” Father Zhang said.

He added, “As they are people ready to devote themselves to Christ, we must give Christ priority. In the formation of our personality, we must be responsible people; in our studies, we should not limit ourselves to textbooks. Only faith will allow us to fulfill this project,” he continued.

The seminary in Xingtai has been in operation for 24 years and seen 1,200 seminarians pass through its classrooms and chapel. Currently preparations are being made for the 25th anniversary celebrations of its founding in 1989, which will be held next year.

The seminary has always given the utmost attention to maintaining a good relationship with the universal Church and is currently living the Year of Faith with many initiatives.
