New priests in China sign of hope

BEIJING (SE): In what is being called a sign of hope, the dioceses of Kaifeng and Zhumadian, in Henan province on mainland China, welcomed six new priests on January 2.

Fides reported that over 1,000 people attended the ordination by Bishop Lian Jiansen, from Jiangmen, of three deacons from Kaifeng and one from Xingtai to the priesthood at a new church dedicated to the Sacred Heart.

Fifty priests concelebrated and 40 seminarians from Shjiazhuang in Hebei, Taiyuan in Xishan, Chifeng in Inner Mongolia, and Wuhan in Hubei, were also present, as well as several sisters.

For the diocese, it was the biggest ordination in recent years. In addition, the diocese of Zhumadian celebrated two ordinations on January 1, also an historic moment, as they were the first for the diocese since 1933.

Fides said, “Both the dioceses, like many other continental communities, have to deal with the lack of priestly vocations. These ordinations are obviously a source of great joy and hope for the local communities and for the entire Church in China, which is doing her best in the field of evangelisation with limited human and material resources.”
