Church prepares for New Year in China

SHIJIAZHUANG (SE): The Church in China intensified its outreach work to the poor and needy in the run up to the Lunar New Year, which began on January 31.

Parish communities focussed especially on senior citizens, the sick, the poor, the needy and the weaker sections of society in their outreach.

Fides reported that in Jining, Inner Mongolia, ordinary parishioners have become hairdressers, cooks, family doctors and cleaners during their visits to the homes of elderly people, as well as bearing the traditional gifts for the New Year.

But most especially, they are bringing Christian love to the lonely, the aged and the sick, the people who in modern day China are most often forgotten by their relatives.

They are also carrying the sacraments to Catholic people living in far flung areas, who are unable to travel to the church to attend Mass.

On January 26, people from Jiujiang, in the province of Jiangxi, distributed posters and leaflets advertising the theme of their parish outreaches, as did people from Xingping, in Shaanxi.

However, in another part of the province, the parish of Donghui, in the diocese of Zhouzhi, started preparations for the New Year with a formation course on giving witness in daily life, which was attended by 400 people between January 12 and 14.

During the course, people shared from the scriptures, as well as reflecting on their experience of living a life of faith.
