United Nations defends report on child sex abuse

GENEVA (ANSA): The head of the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child, Kirsten Sandberg, denied the Vatican accusation that its response to the Vatican presentation of its track record in implementing the convention at a hearing held in Geneva on January 16 is biased.

ANSA reported her as saying on February 7 that the committee made its recommendations after “objectively examining all relevant information... as it does with all state parties.”

She said, “As stated in its concluding observations, the committee welcomed the open and constructive dialogue it had with the delegation of the Holy See, which made positive commitments in numerous areas.”

She singled out the willingness expressed by the delegation to change attitudes and practices as being extremely positive and said that she is looking forward to the adoption of prompt and firm measures for the concrete implementation of its commitments.
