Preparing for Lent in China

BEIJING (SE): In the run up to Lent, 300 people gathered in the cathedral in Wenzhou in China on February 28 for a faith information session around the theme of Living an authentic life in Jesus.

People had been invited to bring their friends along with them and parish staff estimated that about 40 people who are not Catholic also attended.

Fides reported Father Zhong Jinxing as explaining to the gathering, “Just by getting to know Jesus, leaning on Jesus, being converted to Jesus, studying Jesus, following Jesus, trusting Jesus, living within him, we can have an authentic life.”

More gatherings of this kind are being organised during the 40-day Lenten period, which kicked off on March 5. 

In the parish of Jiujiang, in the province of Jiangxi, the first letter of St. Paul to the Corinthians was used as the focus for a Lenten reflection attended by around 40 people over a five-day period from February 24 to 28.

The community at the cathedral parish in Tianjin continues to consolidate the fruit of the Year of Faith aiming at making a quantum leap in the spiritual life of its parishioners.

It organised a faith formation day on February 27, which focussed on the Catechism of the Catholic Church and was attended by hundreds of people.


In the district of Huili in Sichuan, around 70 young people gathered to reflect on the Gospel of St. Matthew between February 7 and 10. Their discussions revolved around the theme of being authentic witnesses to the gospel message.
