Memorial Mass for Father Walling SJ

HONG KONG (SE): The Society of Jesus in Hong Kong will celebrate a memorial Mass for Father Norman Walling at 7.00pm on September 7 at St. Ignatius’ Chapel in Wah Yan College, Kowloon. The Mass is open to all.

Father Walling died peacefully on August 28 at the Cardinal Tien Hospital in Taipei, Waiwan, at 1.58am.

Born in Beresford, California, the United States of America, on 26 March 1929, he entered the Society of Jesus in Los Gatos, California, on 14 August 1947.

He was ordained to the priesthood on 19 March 1961 at the Immaculate Heart of Mary parish in Hsinchu, Taiwan, and professed his perpetual vows on 15 August 1964 at the Sacred Heart of Jesus parish in Hsinchu.

Father Welling spent significant intervals in Hong Kong, the latest of which was at Xavier House in Cheung Chau between 2009 and 2014, as a spiritual director and director of guided retreats.

He was a gentle, kind, wise and humorous man with a gift for languages. He spoke Mandarin, Cantonese and Taiwanese with a high degree of fluency.

He has been a treasure in the lives of many and will be missed greatly.
