Appeal from Cardinal Tong for
Caritas-Hong Kong’s annual fund-raising drive

Turn mercy into action
– give hope to the world –

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ

In the Bull of Indiction of the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy, Pope Francis proclaimed that “Jesus Christ is the face of the Father’s mercy.” This one line sums up the mystery of the Christian faith that mercy has become “living” and “visible” in Jesus of Nazareth, reaching its zenith in Him.

The Pope has also reminded us that wherever we are, we should strive to serve our neighbours for their well-being. Dear Brothers and Sisters, Caritas Annual Fund Raising Campaign offers us a good opportunity to live out the mercy face and turn our good will into actions.

Looking back on the past few months, we can find different catastrophes having taken the lives of thousands, broken the hearts and families of many. We might, from time to time, feel helpless and at a loss.

However, we are fully aware of God’s presence in all these events which enable us to appreciate all the more the true meaning of life and pursue more vigorously our goal of obtaining Eternal Bliss. Don’t you know that everyday in our midst many people are longing for acceptance, love and blessings.

Don’t you know that everyday many people are desperately looking for someone who can listen to the voices of their hearts, who can share with them their sentiments and care for them in their innermost destitution. To live an enriched life, we need not only to devote ourselves to help, to love, to support and to understand one another, but also have to assist the little brothers and sisters who are pacing up and down at the crossroads of plight.

Caritas-Hong Kong is a bridge of love and care. Focussing on serving the Last, the Least and the Lost, Caritas turns mercy into action, as well as transmitting hope to other people. The work of Caritas is not only limited to feeding the poor or the hungry, providing education or medical services; but more importantly, to helping people to help themselves, freeing people from shackles and eventually attaining the crown of life.

I hope you can join the Caritas Family, love the poor, the weak and the underprivileged with empathy. Your good deeds can help those who suffer spiritually, physically or tortured by straitened circumstances to live with full confident and with dignity so as to see the dawn of life.

If one of your kinsmen in any community is in need in the land which the LORD, your God, is giving you, you shall not harden your heart nor close your hand to him in his need. Instead, you shall open your hand to him and freely lend him enough to meet his need… When you give to him, give freely and not with ill will; for the LORD, your God, will bless you for this in all your works and undertakings. The needy will never be lacking in the land; that is why I command you to open your hand to your poor and needy kinsman in your country (Deuteronomy 15:7-8, 10-11).

Please support the Caritas Fund Raising Campaign and together we can experience God’s unfailing love. By sharing generously, contributing selflessly and giving people hope, you will surely live a meaningful life full of God’s blessings and peace.

With blessings and prayers,

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Solemnity of the Assumption 2015
