Holy See Pavilion tops Expo Milan

MILAN (SE): The Holy See’s Pavilion at the Expo Milano 2015 won first prize in the under 2,000 square metre division for best represented.

It made a presentation under the theme of the Expo, Feeding the planet. Energy for Life.

The Expo ended on October 31, after running in the northern Italian city for six months. “It is the recognition of the spirited work done during these six months,” Bishop Luca Bressan, from Milan, told Zenit.

“It also shows that the communicative power of Pope Francis has been able to make inroads in the large public square which was the world Expo.”

Bishop Bressan accepted the award from the Bureau International des Expositions, which promotes the Universal Expositions.

The Holy See Pavilion made a display on the double meaning of food as nourishment for both the body and the soul, developing two biblical quotes, “Not by bread alone” and “Give us this day our daily bread,” which were translated into 13 languages on the outside of the pavilion.

Five scenes representing ecology, fair trade, education and religion-theology were also presented.

An estimated 1.8 million people visited the Holy See Pavilion and 150,000 ($1.25 million) was collected for the support of women and children in Middle Eastern refugee camps.

In addition, 10,000 copies of Pope Francis’ most recent encyclical, Praise Be: On care for our common home (Laudato Si’) were distributed.

The next Universal Expo will take place in 2020 in Dubai.
