Indonesia mourns its most colourful bishop

SEMARANG (AsiaNews): Always known as a colourful character and perhaps the most controversial of the bishops in Indonesia, Archbishop Johannes Pujasumarta, from Semarang in Central Java, died on November 11 at St. Elizabeth Hospital from lung cancer.

Ordained a priest in 1977, he became a bishop on 2008. He is described as a simple, kind, humble and hospitable person. He was well known for his revolutionary style of communication and was the first bishop in Indonesia to make full use of social media, which helped to break down the separation between the Church hierarchy and laity.

When Archbishop Pujasumarta began using the internet and the media, his brother bishops looked somewhat askance, judging his behaviour as at least unusual and even shocking.

However, people loved him for his ability to write little stories explain his motto, Put out into the deep.
