A message from the Catholic Church Lenten Campaign

Lent is approaching and the Church in Hong Kong is launching its annual Lenten Campaign with the theme, Merciful like the Father, which will run from 10 February 10 to March 24. 

Deacon Andrew Au Gar-wai, chairperson of the Lenten Campaign Organising Committee is appealing to parishes, Catholic schools, institutions and communities to participate through prayer, reflection and sacrifice.

Beginning January 18, the committee will be distributing copies of Pope Francis’ Lenten message for 2016, as well as John Cardinal Tong Hon’s Lenten pastoral letter, along with other Lenten Campaign promotional materials.

To deepen the experience of Lent for the younger generation, Lenten CDs with prayers, hymns, and suggestions of charitable activities, and Lenten Paschal Lambs will be made available to children at parish Sunday Schools, as well as primary and secondary schools. 

In addition, there will be a Lenten Charitable Award scheme to encourage participation by both parents and children. Activities include drawing exercises, blogging short articles and organising hunger awareness meals. 

Holders of the Paschal Lambs are reminded to bring the lambs with their Lenten sacrifices in support of the needy, to the parish on Palm Sunday. 

In addition, the organising committee will hold a briefing session for Sunday School teachers and school pastoral assistants at 2.00pm, on January 23 (Saturday), at the hall of Rosary Church, Tsimshatsui, Kowloon, to deepen their understanding of Lent and to demonstrate the use of the CDs and other relevant Lenten promotional materials. The guest speaker will be Father Simon Li Chi-yuen. Registration can be done via the Lenten Campaign website.

The Lenten Campaign Organising Committee will make materials available for free download at its website at: Promotional materials from previous years such as exhibition boards, may be collected from Caritas Social Centres upon request.
