Clashes in Mong Kok

HONG KONG (SE): In the wake of violent clashes between local groups and the police in Mong Kok on the night of the Lunar New Year, February 8, which continued into the daylight hours of the following morning, the diocese of Hong Kong sent a notice to all parishes on February 11 saying that it does not believe that deep-seated social issues can be settled with violence.

“In no way can we justify any form of violence, nor can we agree that deep-seated social issues can be settled by these means,” the notice to the people of the diocese reads.

It calls on people to recall the words of Pope Francis in his Message for World Peace Day this year, where he says that we must, on the one hand, overcome humiliating indifference and, on the other hand, care for the poor and the needy, and ward off destructive cynicism.

The message is signed by the bishop of Hong Kong, John Cardinal Tong Hon.
