Xiamen hosts over 1,000 for Youth Day

XIAMMEN (Agencies): Sharings from young people, a priest and sister who had attended World Youth Day in Madrid, Spain, during August this year, were the high point of the first Youth Day celebrated by the diocese of Xiamen, in Fujian province, China, on the feast of Christ the King, November 20.

Over 1,000 young people gathered under the theme of the event in Spain: Planted and built up in Jesus Christ. Firm in the fatih. Fides reports that the gathering was presided over by Bishop Joseph Cai Bing Rui, who was ordained on May 8 this year, with a mandate from the Holy See.

In addition to the celebration of the Eucharist and presentations of their own faith journeys by local youth and youth groups, a priest and a sister, who had the opportunity to make the trip to Madrid, explained the “wonderful experience of universal communion.”

Finally Bishop Cai urged the young people to take with them into their communities of origin, “What you have listened to, seen and heard, in order to put down roots in Christ with all members of the community, building communion.”

The initiative of setting up youth groups in the diocese of Xiamen began 16 years ago and was motivated “by the great love of Christ for the Church and communion.” In this context, the young people present were asked to commit themselves “to bearing witness to the faith and to living the gospel.”

The diocese currently has more than 30,000 Catholics, mostly farmers and workers. They are ministered to by a dozen priests and 15 women religious.
