Priest and seminarians die in car crash

SHIJIAZHUANG (UCAN): Six seminarians and a priest from the unofficial community of the Catholic Church in northern Hebei province were killed in a road accident on December 11 and one seminarian is in a serious condition in No. 3 Hospital in Shijiazhuang, the provincial capital.

He was thrown from the minivan, which was badly damaged in an accident along the Jinzhou section of the provincial highway.

Thirty-nine-year-old Father Shi Liming, from Baoding diocese, was at the wheel of the minivan at the time of the accident.

He was ordained about 10 years ago and on the staff of the local seminary, which does not have a fixed location so as to avoid government crackdowns.

Two of the dead seminarians, as well as the one who was injured, came from Xiwanzi in Hebei, and two others were from northeastern China, one from Tianjin and the other one from Xinji city, near Shijiazhuang.

They were mostly in their early 20s and had enrolled at the start of the academic year in October. Their bodies were taken to a funeral parlor in Jinzhou. The dates for their funerals had yet to be decided.
