Kidnapped priest still alive

SANAA (AsiaNews): Despite rumours that spread prior to Easter that Father Tom Uzhunnalil, who was kidnapped during the bloody attack on the Missionaries of Charity compound in Aden, Yemen, on March 4, was to be crucified on Good Friday and had been tortured, Bishop Paul Hinder believes that he is alive and well.

The apostolic vicar of Southern Arabia said that photographs were not convincing and other reports cannot be substantiated.

On March 30, government officials in the Salesian priest’s native India were reported to have received a ransom note from the Islamic State, demanding millions of dollars for his safe return.

So far, there has been no word on the fate of the 56-year-old priest. Born in Kerala, his uncle, Father Matthew, who died last year, was also a Salesian and was the founder of the mission in Yemen.
