Netherlands honours a courageous son

HONG KONG (SE): In honour of the Dutch Bishop Frans Schraven, who was murdered along with eight companions by the Japanese military in China on 9 October 1937 for refusing to allow female refugees in his care to be used as comfort women, Archbishop Savio Hon Tai-fai has been invited to bless a commemorative path on June 26 that has been built in his honour.

The Schraven Path is an attractive 10-kilometre-long hiking trail beginning at the Rozenhof Guesthouse in Lottum and passing several chapels through attractive natural scenery to Kaldenbroeck, the birthplace of Bishop Schraven (1873).

At Kaldenbroeck Castle a special memorial site and cross will be blessed. Later in the day, a blood red rose of Tantau Rosen will be officially named after the bishop at De Rozenhof Lottum, a scenic garden and camping ground.

The red colour of the rose is symbolic of the blood they shed.
