Death Notice - Bishop Thomas Zeng Jingmu


Yujiang (SE): Bishop Thomas Zeng Jingmu, from Yujiang, Jiangxi, China, died on April 2, according to an April 22 report from Agenzia Fides. He was almost 96-years-old. 

It was reported that the former bishop of the unofficial Catholic community of Yujiang, fell at his home on March 26 following a stroke and suffered a severe concussion. He was immediately brought to hospital in Fuzhou, Fujian, where he underwent surgery. On April 2 his condition took a turn for the worse and passed away at 10.50pm. 

A funeral Mass was concelebrated in Bishop Zeng’s hometown of Zengjiacun, Chongren district, on April 6 by his nephew, Father Zeng Zhongliang, together with around 20 other priests. Thousands of people from Yujiang diocese attended—a testament to regard in which he was held and a show of gratitude for the more than 25 years of service he rendered to the Church and to the community.

Bishop Zeng was born on 23 July 1919 (though some sources report a different date). He entered the seminary at Wenshan in 1930, continued his studies at the major seminary in Fuzhou in Fujian in 1944 before transferring to Zhejiang Seminary in 1948. 

He was ordained to the priesthood on 25 March 1949 by Bishop William Charles Quinn and worked as an assistant parish priest and parish priest in different communities. On 13 January 1990, was ordained a bishop by Bishop James Xie Shiguang, from Funing.Bishop Zeng was detained several times and spent around 30 of his life in incarceration.
