Divine Word Seminarian makes perpetual vows

HONG KONG (SE): Arjay Venus, a seminarian of the Society of the Divine Word, made his profession of perpetual vows during a thanksgiving Mass at St. Edward’s parish, Lam Tin, on May 2, one month before his diaconate ordination.

Father Frank Budenholzer, the present provincial superior for the China Province of the Society of the Divine Word, concelebrated the Mass together with 15 other Divine Word missionaries.

At the beginning of the Mass, Father Budenholzer invited those present to pray for Reverend Venus who would be making a lifelong commitment to the religious life and his ministries. He said all people are committed to God in different ways, but a religious has to make a vow of chastity, poverty and obedience.

In his homily, Father Budenholzer said that, as the word of God became incarnate (John 1:1-18), the founder of the Society of the Divine Word, St. Arnold Janssen, spread the gospel all over the world through the word of God.

He invited people to be part of the mission of the Divine Word missionaries,  who have been given a special task to use the word of God to help others to know Jesus.

At the end of the ceremony, Reverend Venus thanked Father Budenholzer and Father James Areechira, district superior, and other senior confrères for their support during his formation.

He said he felt blessed and happy, and expressed his gratitude to the around 500 people present, mostly from the Chinese and Filipino communities, who attended the bilingual Mass.

The 33-year-old seminarian shared that he had experienced challenging but rewarding experiences since he entered the seminary 13 years ago and since he arrived in Hong Kong five years ago. He again thanked the congregation for taking care of his seed of vocation.

Reverend Venus will be ordained a deacon on June 9 at a 3.00pm Mass at Christ the King Chapel, Causeway Bay.
