PIME sisters celebrate 75 years of mission

Hong Kong (SE): The Missionary Sisters of the Immaculate, popularly known as the PIME Sisters, celebrated the 75th anniversary of the foundation of their congregation, on Sunday December 4 at St. Thomas the Apostle church in Tsing Yi. The institute was established in Milan, Italy, on 8 December 1936 as an expression of the missionary spirit of the Church in obedience to the mandate of Jesus to “make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 28:19).

Bishop John Tong Hon of Hong Kong, concelebrated the thanksgiving Mass and many friends of the PIME Sisters joined in the celebrations. The sisters renewed their commitment to live out their vocation to give witness to the love of God for everyone. At the conclusion of the Eucharistic celebration, everyone was given a few seeds symbolising the Word of God to be brought to all our brothers and sisters.

Drawing from the missionary spirit of the Pontifical Institute for Foreign Missions (PIME), Sister Giuseppina Dones of the Sisters of Reparation, together with a young woman, Giuseppina Rodolfi, founded the congregation in answer to God’s call and their dream of helping to spread the gospel in those regions where PIME Fathers were already working.

PIME Father Paolo Manna played a key role in helping set up the congregation, after securing a mandate from the PIME general assembly in 1934.

He lent his insight and passion for the mission to the undertaking which came to fruition and fulfillment through the help of Archibishop Lorenzo Balconi, then-Apostolic Vicar of Hanchung, China, and PIME superior general, who had been in China for 33 years.

Over the last 75 years, the PIME Sisters have been sent as far afield as Italy and Great Britain, India, Bangladesh, Hong Kong, Brazil, Cameroon, Guinea Bissau and Algeria, and Papua New Guinea.
