Spreading the fire of the Holy Spirit

HONG KONG (SE): Around 800 people from Charismatic groups in Hong Kong diocese took part in a celebration to mark Pentecost Sunday at the Caritas Community Hall in Caine Road, Central, on May 15.

Organised by the Hong Kong Catholic Charismatic Service Committee under the theme, Spreading the Fire, it was part of a lead-in to the 2017 golden anniversary celebration of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal.

The afternoon began with a praise and worship service led by the Praise Ministry of the Bukas Loob sa Diyos Hong Kong Community, inspiring the gathering to rise up in prayer and song to feel the presence of the Holy Spirit.

The guest speaker for the day, Dominican Father Benedict Mac Cionaoith, based the first part of his talk  on Luke 4:16-20, in which Jesus goes to the synagogue and proclaims verses from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah about the sending of the saviour to set the people free.

Father Mac Cionaoith said that Jesus had been aware that he was the son of God since he was 12-years-old.

He then discussed what Isaiah meant when he said the saviour would “proclaim freedom for prisoners, recovery of sight for the blind and set the oppressed free.”

He also mentioned the Servant Songs, also from Isaiah, which describe the service, suffering and exaltation of the Servant of the Lord and how the songs can be applied to Jesus Christ in his miracles and teachings.

During a brief intermission, Ruel Trinidad led a quiet prayer before Father Mac Cionaoith addressed the meaning of the logo developed for the Jubilee of Mercy: Jesus taking upon his shoulders the lost soul out of his love for humankind.

Father Mac Cionaoith then proceeded to discuss the Holy Spirit as portrayed in poetry, beginning from the Eastern Orthodox tradition.

He also spoke about the Carmelite poet, Sister Jessica Powers, also known as Sister Miriam of the Holy Spirit, and read out some lines from her work, which explores her experience of the Holy Spirit.

The event concluded with a Mass concelebrated by Joseph Cardinal Zen Ze-kiun, Father Lawrence Lee Len and Father Mac Cionaoith.
