Day of prayer for China

HONG KONG (SE): May 24, the feast of Our Lady Help of Christians, is also a day on which the worldwide Church is asked to pray especially for the Church in China.

Pope Francis asked people gathered for his angelus address on May 22 to spiritually unite themselves with the Catholic people of China on that day and pray that they may be able to promote an authentic culture of encounter and harmony in society.

Pope Francis prayed, “Let us ask Mary to give her sons and daughters in China the capacity to discern in every situation the signs of the loving presence of God, who always welcomes and always forgives.”

The feast is recognised with a major pilgrimage fiesta at the shrine of Our Lady of Sheshan outside Shanghai and the pope prayed that Mary may give to her sons and daughters in China the capacity to discern in every situation the signs of the loving presence of God, who always welcomes and always forgives.

He also asked that they can be a sign of God’s love in society.

The day was set aside as a day of prayer for China by Pope Benedict XVI in his letter to the Catholics of China in 2007.
