Kidnapped priest alive and well

ADEN (SE): The Indian-born Salesian Father Tom Uzhunnalli, who was kidnapped in Aden, Yemen, during a raid on the compound of the Missionaries of Charity on March 4, is reported to be alive and well.

AsiaNews reported that efforts are underway to secure his release from the Islamic militants who killed four Missionaries of Charity in the raid on a nursing home.

Although there has been no public information about his whereabouts, rumours that he would be tortured and crucified, which spread through the Internet in late March, have been denied by his superiors.

Indian government officials reported that they were working for his release. Now informed officials say that negotiations with his captors are advancing.

Bishop Paul Hinder, the apostolic vicar for the region that includes Yemen, said that there are no new developments in the campaign to secure his release and cautioned against optimistic expectations that it would happen quickly.
