In the footsteps of the apostles

SHIJIAZHUANG (SE): The feasts of the apostles have a particular feel for the Church in China and these occasions are chosen to launch pastoral initiatives and organise special projects around parishes.

Fides reported that many feel that it places the activity under the special protection of the saints and commits to walk in their footsteps.

The feast of St. Barnabas on June 11 was celebrated by communities across China with a great variety of functions.

In the cathedral at Xikai in the Tianjin, 93 catechumens received the sacraments of initiation. On the same day a new catechetics course was inaugurated.

Twenty-two seminarians from the Minor Seminary in Xi’an, in Shaanxi province, ended their formation course. During the graduating ceremony, the rector urged them to continue their vocational journey wherever they are.

“Some will enter the major seminary, others will return to their dioceses for pastoral service... but wherever you are, you must always remember to pray and live your faith in everyday life in the continuous encounter with the Lord,” he told the graduating students.

Lay groups in the diocese that have always supported the vocations of the seminarians, not only with prayer, but also responding to their specific, everyday needs, presented the young people with a backpack and a new bible.

They also watched a video together recalling some moments of life in the seminary during the year—study, prayer and simple fun times.

The parish of Lixi in Tangshan, Hubei province, made a pilgrimage for the Year of Mercy to the parish of Lulong. Forty people crossed through the Gate of Mercy, prayed and then shared their experiences of faith and mission with the various parish groups.
