Pope set for World Youth Day

VATICAN (SE): Pope Francis is set for his visit to Poland during the upcoming World Youth Day that is to take place in Krakow from July 25 to 31.

He will fly into Krakow on July 27 and, after the usual round of meetings with civic authorities and the diplomatic corps, visit the president of Poland and the bishops.

On the following day he is set to celebrate Mass at the Shrine of Czestochowa to mark the 1,050th anniversary of what is considered to be the baptism of Poland, before flying back to Krakow by helicopter to have his first meeting with young people attending the Youth Day.

On July 29, he will visit Auschwitz and take part in a short ceremony that is listed as one of the high moments of his visit. Originally, he had been expected to speak at Camp Birkenau, known as the extermination camp, but it has now been decided that he will simply spend time in prayer and reflection.

On that evening, he will preside at a way of the cross with the delegates to World Youth Day in Jordan Park, Krakow, and on the following day pass through the Door of Divine Mercy, prior to celebrating the sacrament of reconciliation with young people.

On the final day of the international gathering of Catholic youth, he will celebrate an open air Mass at Campus Misericordiae before meeting with representatives from the organising committees for the event and flying back to Rome in the early evening.
