In communion with World Youth Day

ZHOUZHI (SE): A Franciscan summer parish youth camp in Zhouzhi, Shaanxi province, chose Follow St. Francis and live the Jubilee as its theme. It ran from July 15 to 23 in the run up to the celebration of World Youth Day in Poland.

As the young Catholics prepared to be in spiritual communion with the hundreds of thousands in Krakow, the Franciscan community in the diocese organised a nine-day camp.

They rejoiced at a special reference made by Pope Francis to young people who were unable to travel to Poland on July 24 at his regular midday angelus prayer, when he said that he hopes they could participate through various forms of media and in this way be united in prayer with the international gathering in Krakow.

Fides reported that 130 young people with 20 volunteer helpers led by seven priests spent nine days mixed with prayer, sharing, social service, on the ground experience and discussion.

A festival of brother- and sisterhood was celebrated with song, visits to the sick and other social services, as well as an outing to admire the beauty and wonder of God’s creation.

The life and spirituality of St. Francis, The Franciscan movement yesterday and today, The mercy of God is the mercy of Jesus and Learning to be a channel of peace constituted the main themes of the camp.

During a concelebrated Mass at the conclusion of the camp, the young people were encouraged to strive to follow in the footsteps of St. Francis and to live the Jubilee of Mercy with deep commitment.
