Cardinal Zen celebrates four score of years

The former bishop of Hong Kong, Joseph Cardinal Zen Ze-kiun, right, celebrated his
80th birthday with Bishop John Tong Hon, left, and around 80 priests of the diocese, on January 13, on the 9th floor of the Diocese Centre, Caine Road.

He extended his congratulations to Bishop Tong on his elevation to cardinal by Pope Benedict XVI. He recalled that they were both ordained bishops at the same time—
9 December 1996—and that now, they will both be cardinals.

He reminisced about his days as a young man with his family in Shanghai during the Second World War, saying, “Life was difficult, but we were happy.” Now that he has moved his residence from the seminary in Aberdeen to the Salesian House in Shaukiwan, he observed that “God has put me in a good place to enjoy my retirement.”

Bishop Tong congratulated Bishop Zen on his birthday and lauded his efforts for the Church in China, as well as migrants, the poor and Catholic education in Hong Kong. He called Bishop Zen a good, hardworking role model.
