Appeal from Cardinal Tong for the annual Caritas Fund Raising Campaign

Turn mercy into action
– give hope to the world –

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ

“Refuse no one the good on which he has a claim when it is in your power to do it for him. Say not to your neighbour, ‘Go, and come again, tomorrow I will give,’ when you can give at once” (Proverbs 3:27-28)

Brothers and Sisters, people say eat, drink and be merry, but I really want to urge you to be generous while you have the opportunity. Everyone can contribute and the value of your generosity is not measured by the amount.

The important thing is not to delay and not to refuse. In fact, you are the one who is most blessed as you have the means to offer help to your neighbour. A giving heart and your thoughtfulness is a real sign of hope and a confidence booster to the dignity of those in need.

Many people regret that Hong Kong is becoming more divided and people more self-centred as the disconnect in society widens. This strengthens our challenge to work to remove the barriers, bridge the gaps and bless each other in the spirit of the worship of God and love of one another.

As the social welfare agency of the Catholic Church in Hong Kong, Caritas strives to provide quality services not only to those deprived groups, but also across generations. It dreams of the aged living with self-reliance and vigour; young people growing up happily in a healthy environment and those in their golden years using their talent and ability for the common good of society.

However, the professional team at Caritas cannot work alone. It desperately needs your generosity, participation and support as part of our family in making Hong Kong a place aglow with rays of hope, vistas of colour and the life-giving light of the dawn.

Please give your support to the Caritas Fund Raising Campaign. Together we can experience the eternal love of God and the boundless grace of his care. “Let us not grow tired of doing good, for in due time we shall reap our harvest, if we do not give up. So then, while we have the opportunity, let us do good to all, but especially to those who belong to the family of the faith” (Galatians 6:9-10).

With blessings and prayers,
Sincerely yours in Christ,

+ JOHN CARD. TONG
Solemnity of the Assumption 2016
