Canon law dictionary in Korean

SEOUL (UCAN): Father Joseph Rhee Chan-woo received the 20th Catholic Academic Award at a ceremony held at Francis Hall in Myeongdong Cathedral in Seoul, South Korea, on November 10 for his work in compiling a dictionary on canon law.

The Canon Law Dictionary is the first such text in Korean that gives a substantial exolanation of Church law.

“In today’s society, haunted by secularism and relativism, we need to firmly settle our theological identity and Church scholars are desperately needed in this task. The Catholic Academic Award has contributed by encouraging scholars to do their best work,” Andrew Cardinal Yeom Soo-jung said in his congratulatory message.

Land reform must be real reform

MANILA (UCAN): A fresh call for genuine land reform and effective support structures for farmers came from the secretary of Caritas Philippines, Father Edwin Gariguez.

Father Gariguez said the agrarian reform law should be replaced with a programme that truly serves the needs of farmers.

“Land distribution is not enough,” he said on November 16, the 12th anniversary of the massacre of 14 farmers in the northern province of Tarlac.

He explained that land reform should “empower farmers to finance or run their own farm land without the intervention of middle men or traders.”

From president to canon lawyer

DUBLIN (SE): The former president of Ireland, Mary McAleese, has described the experience of doing a doctorate in canon law that she has just completed as like sleeping in the same bed as a python.

“You never finish it, you just get to the point where you have to abandon it,” she told the Independent on November 24.

She said that it seems most practitioners of canon law end up annulling marriages, explaining that she doesn’t want to do that.

But as the only married person in her class, she said nobody ever asked her a question. She reflected that her classmates seemed to have an unhealthy interest in bad marriages.
