Caritas Raffle draw

HONG KONG (SE): A public draw of the Caritas Raffle for this year was held in the Caritas Hall in Caine Road on November 25 in the presence of around 60 people.

With the winning ticket numbers pulled out by a computer programme in the presence of an auditing team, the vice president of the Friends of Caritas, Andrew Chan Tak-kuen, kicked off the draw, spinning the first round of 20 numbers.

Bernard Chan Yuk-lun, from the Caritas Council, Michael Chuang chak-nin, the patron of the Fund Raising Committee, Anthony To Kwai-fung, from the management board of the Canossa Hospital, Pauline Cheung Po-lin, the patron of the Fund Raising Committee, and Peter Leung Ming-hym, the deputy chief executive of the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (Asia), all had their turns.

The winning numbers were displayed on a big screen.

All up, 100 winners were chosen and their ticket numbers are published on page 12 of this issue of the Sunday Examiner.

The annual raffle, which runs in conjunction with the bazaar season each year, is a big money spinner for the Church charity, offering prizes donated by various companies, individuals and organisations.

The first prize for this year is 15 taels of 99 gold bullion bars, with a value currently running a bit over $10,900 a tael (1.33 ounces), will be a good surprise for one lucky ticket holder, but a whole range of prizes are there to be picked up by the remaining 99 who came out in the lucky draw.

Ranging from free credit card spending, a men’s Franck Müller watch, dining coupons and round trip tickets to various Asian destinations, to vouchers for the Catholic Centre, a wide variety of prizes have been donated for the holders of the lucky tickets.

In a throwback to a past era, a few people in the hall sat with their tickets spread out on their knees, eager to see if they were going to be lucky enough to score a prize.

Old hands remember when quite a large crowd would turn up just to find out if this was their lucky year or not.
