Catholic Congress kicks off

BEIJING (UCAN): The Ninth National Congress of Catholic Representatives opened in Beijing on December 27 with the chairperson of the Chinese Catholic Patriotic Association, Bishop Johan Fang Xinguao, saying that the Patriotic Association and the Bishops’ Conference of the Catholic Church in China have united people under the banner of love for country and Church, as well as promoted the Sinicisation of theology.

He interpreted this as meaning the Church will promote the principle of independence from Rome, run in a democratic fashion and participate in charitable work.

The congress, which in reality is a rubber stamp for government policy, is set to pass motions in the spirit of the National Conference on Religious Work held in April last year, in which the president of China, Xi Jinping, stressed the necessity of Sinicisation of religion.

Wang Zuo’an, the director of the State Administration of Religious Affairs, said the Church has stayed firmly on the path of the independence principle and cultivated love for country.
