Death Notice

Hong Kong (SE): Brother Edward Kowala, from the Salesians of Don Bosco, died on February 10 at Canossa Hospital. He was 90-years-old.

Born in what is now the Czech Republic, he served in the military during World War II. As a prisoner of war in England, he became acquainted with the Salesians which he joined in 1956. In 1958 he volunteered to come to Hong Kong as a missionary.

Brother Kowala worked at the Aberdeen Technical School from 1960 to 1962 prior to his posting to St. Louis School, Sai Ying Pun, where he remained on the staff for more than 50 years between 1962 and 1974, and 1977 and 2017. The only interruption was a three-year period from 1974 to 1977 when he studied for a Bachelor of Divinity degree in Maynooth, Ireland.

The Salesians of Don Bosco are grateful to the St. Louis Old Boys’ Association, the Little Sisters of the Poor in Aberdeen and the staff of Canossa Hospital, that took loving care of Brother Kowala in the last months of his long life.

He is remembered as a beloved brother and loving father-figure, a dedicated teacher, a jolly companion in soccer matches, a zealous educator and pastor of young people, a gentleman and a friend.

A Requiem Mass was scheduled for February 17 at St. Anthony’s Church, Pokfulam, and a funeral Mass on February 18, followed by burial in St. Michael’s Catholic Cemetery, Happy Valley.
