No schism in China

HONG KONG (SE): In commenting on an article written by John Cardinal Tong Hon, The future of the Sino-Vatican dialogue from an ecclesiastical point of view (Sunday Examiner, February 5), some media spoke of the Church in China as schismatic.

However, the Church in China is not in schism and has never been accused of being so.

Pope John XXIII once made reference to a schism back in the early 1960s, but quickly withdrew his remark.

However, there is a devastating split in the Church, but not along the lines of one loyal to the pope- and the other not. The government recognised and non-recognised Church communities are both loyal to the pope, but face different hurdles in living this out.

The Church does suffer from division that is difficult to heal, but it is not a Church in schism.
