Spring at Caritas

HONG KONG (SE): Guests at the Caritas Spring Reception held in the community hall in its head office in Caine Road on February 17 were treated to an exhibition of Dragon Dancing by students from Caritas Lok Jun School and a graceful performance by students from the Caritas Pelletier School.

The Caritas Lok Jun School, located in Tai Wai, provides special education for children aged six to 18 who are moderately challenged intellectually. It has an enrollment of around 90 students. Founded in 1994, it also provides boarding facilities for those who need to avail of it.

The Caritas Pelletier School in Clear Water Bay Road is a special secondary school that teaches the regular curriculum to girls with emotional problems or erratic behavioural patterns caused by difficulties in adjusting to the atmosphere in their family or school lives.

Guests at the reception, including those representing corporations and government departments that support and work with Caritas in its outreach to the least, the lost and the last in Hong Kong society, were given a concrete demonstration of what can be achieved by those who can easily be ignored, if they receive proper help and care.

The hard work and professional expertise of the 5,300 staff, the devotion of around 12,000 volunteers and the belief of those who receive services, combined with the generous support of donors, have made Caritas a quiet achiever in society that has won support from both government and the community at large.

John Cardinal Tong Hon, the patron of Caritas in Hong Kong, thanked the guests representing wide and varied sectors of society for their on-going support of the work that allows Caritas to operate without a total dependence on any one particular source.

With the spring comes new life and Cardinal Tong, his coadjutor, Bishop Michael Yeung Ming-cheung, and Father Joseph Yim Tak-lung, the chief executive officer of Caritas, proposed a toast to the activities of the Catholic service provider for the coming year.
