Death Notice - Sister Catherine Rowe

Born on 7 March 1942 in Stamford, Connecticut, she moved with her family to Florida where she went to high school in Tampa, followed by three years at the St. Vincent’s Hospital Nursing School in Jacksonville.

Graduated as a registered nurse in 1963, she moved on to the next chapter in her life when she entered the Maryknoll Sisters’ novitiate at Valley Park, Missouri, making her first vows on 24 June 1966 at Maryknoll in New York, before earning an associate of arts degree from Mary Rogers College in 1967.

Sister Rowe was assigned to Hong Kong in 1968 where she learned Cantonese and took her final vows on 12 June 1974.

Over the next 10 years, she worked at Our Lady of Maryknoll Hospital, Wong Tai Sin, choosing to remain a staff nurse with close daily contact among the patients suffering from various illnesses, family struggles and other challenges.

She was widely admired for her deep compassion, as well as her extraordinary ability to calm patients when overcome with restlessness and anxiety.

In 1978 she returned to the Maryknoll Sisters Centre in New York, where she worked at the Bethany House nursing facility.

Then it was to The Philippines for a course in Clinical Pastoral Care at St. Luke’s Hospital before returning to Hong Kong and joining the pastoral ministry team at Our Lady of Maryknoll Hospital.

This enabled her to have more time with grieving families, extending to them her gentle compassion, understanding and kindheartedness, which comforted and consoled them.  Over the years, her coworkers grew in respect and admiration for her deep layers of empathy and understanding of the human condition.  Many of them kept in contact with Sister Rowe up until her death.
