Indonesian community celebrates 29th birthday

HONG KONG (SE): The Sacred Heart of Jesus Indonesian Catholic Community celebrated its 29 anniversary with a Mass celebrated by John Cardinal Tong Hon on July 2, marking the years of the Indonesian community’s journeying in Hong Kong.

The chaplain to the Indonesian community, Father Heribertus Hadiarto, together with Father Nicolas De Francqueville and Father Wa Wan joined Cardinal Tong in celebrating the Mass at Christ the King Chapel in Causeway Bay.

Reverend Kornelius Supranoto Bardata served as the deacon during the ceremony.

The celebration was attended by more than 500 people including the Indonesian consul general, Tri Tharyat. Two babies were baptised and nine adults were confirmed.

A celebration at the end of Mass was conducted under the theme Love in Diversity at the adjacent St. Paul’s Convent School. In song and dance, the gathering was challenged to respect differences among people and treat one another with love and acceptance.

The gathering also included congratulatory words for Reverend Bardata, from the Society of the Divine Word, who was ordained a deacon on the previous day by Bishop Stephen Lee Bun-sang together with Reverend Hoang van Hien Peter, a Vietnamese seminarian, at Our Lady of Fatima Church in Macau.

Reverend Bardata was born in Indonesia in 1982 and joined the congregation in 2002. He received his formation and a degree in philosophy in his hometown. He came to Hong Kong in 2009 and studied the Cantonese language for two years before venturing to Macau in 2011. He is currently studying theology at the University of St. Joseph in Macau and has been living at the parish of Our Lady of Fatima.

His parents and brother travelled from Indonesia to join the celebration.
