Death Notice - Sister Cara Perego

HONG KONG (SE): Canossian Sister Carla Perego (白寧靄修女) died on the evening of August 28 at the age of 89 after 64 years of missionary life.

In May, Sister Perego suffered a minor stroke and was transferred to Villa Bakhita for better care. However, on August 22 she suffered a double stroke and was admitted to Canossa Hospital as her condition rapidly deteriorated.

Born in Vimercate, Italy, on 1 April 1928 to a Catholic family, she finished her studies in commercial training before joining the Canossian religious family at the age of 25. She did her novitiate in Vimercate and, after three years formation, was sent to Hong Kong in 1953 where she professed her perpetual vows in 1958.

Sister Perego taught domestic science and Catechism in schools and was also a superior or vice superior of various Canossian houses for many years, serving the sisters in the convents at Caine Road, Bethany, St. Francis and St. Mary’s with motherly love and care. She was well-loved by old friends and past students.

In spite of deteriorating health and advancing age, she was always composed and ready to offer assistance to those who came to her, especially the poor—a model Daughter of Charity, Servant of the poor.

A funeral Mass was celebrated for Sister Perego at the chapel of Canossa Hospital on September 1 followed by burial at St. Michael’s Catholic Cemetery, Happy Valley. May she rest in peace.
