Belgian Trappists’ brew voted world’s best on beer-lovers website

OXFORD (CNS): A hearty dark brown beer produced at the Trappist Abbey of St. Sixtus of Westvleteren, Belgium, has been rated the world’s best brew by an online community of beer lovers. 

The Westvleteren 12 brew— with an alcohol content of 10.2 per cent—was rated the best in the world by the United States of America (US)-based Ratebeer.com, which offers connoisseurs the chance to discuss and rate their favorite brews. 

Coincidentally, the monks are temporarily boosting production of the special brew to pay for renovation work at their western Flanders abbey. 

They said that for the time being they would make one additional batch per month and offer it at participating supermarkets, a first for the order. 

Until now, the Trappists only sold their beer to individuals in direct transactions from the abbey, and have never used agents as distributors or retail outlets.

Customers must call ahead to reserve their purchase, which is limited to two crates of 24 bottles every 60 days. 

Monastery spokesperson, Mark Bode, told France’s Catholic daily newspaper, La Croix, that the extra income will “finance important works” at the abbey, which dates back to 1831,......
