School showcases joy of learning

Hong Kong (SE): Caritas Wu Cheng-chung Secondary School in Pokfulam, welcomed parents and students from primary schools in Hong Kong’s Southern District to its Spring Open Day on Saturday March 10.

The event showcased various workshops organised by subjects and groups, including school-based projects based on STEAM (science, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics) education; a Nerf Hunt, a fun sport activity; handicrafts and cooking, to name a few.

Vistors gathered in the school hall where they were warmly welcomed by principal, Stephen Chan Sun-hang, before the dean of the Academic Committee, Chan Shuk-yee, explained the school’s curriculum.

Teachers and student ambassadors then brought the visitors on a fun-filled campus tour to the various workshops. Student helpers took the initiative and their language fluency and self-confidence received plenty of praise.

The entertaining workshops helped visitors to get to know more about the school through experiencing the fun of learning.

The Multi-experiential Learning Workshops featured the Mbot Workshop of the ICT Department, where the students were able to remotely control a robotic car using an iPad and the Herbal Dye Workshop organised by the Science Department where guests created patterned handkerchiefs using natural dyes from petals and leaves.

The sports department hosted a Nerf Hunt activity, which tested shooting accuracy with strategic manoeuvring skills, while making chocolate chip cookies at the catering and hospitality facilities proved to be a highlight. Parents also enjoyed the handicraft of bracelet-making, producing jewellery using colourful beads.

The whole school took on a festive atmosphere, with visiting parents and students expressing amazement at the diversity of learning experiences and the joy of learning that the students of Caritas Wu Cheng-chung Secondary School experience every day.
