May God be glorified says jubilarian

Father Edward Yu Fook-min, at the age of 81, is celebrating the Golden Jubilee of his priestly ordination this year. People love him for his homilies laced with stories. His simplicity and soft-spoken demeanor make him endearing. His series of talks on the writings of St. John in the Bible made the gospel messages comprehensible to the ordinary faithful.
Father Yu was born in Hong Kong in 1937 and joined the Holy Spirit Seminary to study for the priesthood in 1959 and had his priestly formation in Rome. He belonged to the first batch of seminarians from Hong Kong who were recommended by Bishop Lorenzo Bianchi to receive philosophical and theological training in Rome. He was ordained a priest on July 29, on the Feast Day of Ss. Peter and Paul in Rome by Pope St. Paul VI in 1968.
On his return to Hong Kong, he served in the Holy Spirit Seminary as spiritual director, vice rector and later as rector from 1969 to 1977.
Over the past 50 years of his priestly ministry he has worked in various capacities in Hong Kong: the Catholic Marriage Advisory Council and the Diocesan Catechetical Centre, as well as eight parishes such as now-defunct Christ the King parish, Cheung Sha Wan; St. Jude’s parish, North Point, St. Peter’s parish, Aberdeen; St. Andrew’s parish, Kowloon Tong; Holy Cross parish, Sai Wan Ho; St. Anne’s parish, Stanley; St. Stephen’s parish, Ha Kwai Chung; and now at St. Benedict parish, Shatin.
A dedicated writer, Father Yu first contributed articles to Joyful Youth, a section for students under the Chinese language Kung Kao Po diocesan newspaper, in 1993. Compilations of his homilies were later published in which he presented the gospel in a modern way through stories, a skill he learned from the style of the parables of Jesus. In recent years, he has published a series of books for spiritual reading.
St. Benedict Parish celebrated Father Yu’s Golden Jubilee together with the parish feast day on July 15. This year is also the silver jubilee of the dedication of the Church of St. Benedict.
Celebrating the golden jubilee, Father Yu repeats the motto which he chose during his ordination 50 years ago: Ut in omnibus glorificetur Deus! (so that in all things may God be glorified).
