Musical about Matteo Ricci coming soon

HONG KONG (SE): A musical production about the life of Jesuit Father Matteo Ricci, scheduled to be performed at Hong Kong Cultural Centre, Tsimshatsui, from April 20 to 28 next year. Intercultural Dialogue Limited, who are behind the musical, signed up volunteers to assist with production and  backstage work during a briefing at the Po Chiu Catholic Secondary School, Yau Tong, on October 21.

Damian Lau Chung-yan, the director and the scriptwriter, said that while depicting the life of Father Ricci, the musical will also have entertaining elements to attract non-believers to come and watch.

Father Giovanni Giampietro, the musical’s spiritual director, said Father Ricci should be remembered for his humility in accepting the Chinese culture and making significant contributions to the cultural exchange between China and the west.

He expressed hopes that people might come to know more about Christianity through the musical rendition of the story of Father Ricci’s mission to China.

The show will have drama, dances as well as performances with Chinese and western musical instruments.

Noted lyricist, Cheng Kwok-kong, composer, Henry Lai Wan-man, as well as producer, Johnny To Kei-fung, are also involved in the production.

Chu Meng-bok, a volunteer, told the Kung Kao Po that she signed up to help because the musical gives her a chance to use her talents and she appreciates Father Ricci’s contributions in China.

The tickets for the musical will be on sale at parishes from December this year to January next year.
