People troop to Sheshan shrine

SHANGHAI (SE): More than 8,000 people attended the opening of the Marian month of May at the Our Lady of Sheshan Shrine on the outskirts of Shanghai on May 1.

The shrine was earmarked by Pope Benedict XVI in 2007 as the focal point for World Day of Prayer for the Church in China, which is celebrated each year on May 24.

Fides reported that 90-year-old Bishop Aloysius Jin Luxian presided at the solemn procession, which included the recitation of the rosary and a Mass concelebrated by 15 priests.

On the previous day, the month of prayer was formally opened in the square in front of the basilica at the shrine.

In the deanery of Pudong, the most industrialised part of the city, more than 2,000 people attended an opening ceremony on May 2 at the parish of Our Lady of Lourdes. The parish will hold a procession in honour of Our Lady on every Saturday during May.
