Final rest for Maryknoll sister

 HONG KONG (SE): Sister Mary Doretta Leonard died on November 27 at the Maryknoll Sisters Centre in Maryknoll, New York, the United States of Americ. She was 93-years-old and had been a Maryknoll Sister for 73 years.
Mary was born in New York City on 26 June 1925 and studied at the Fordham School of Education from 1944-1945. She entered the Maryknoll Sisters Novitiate in on 26 September 1945 and received the religious name, Sister Doretta. She made her First Profession of Vows on 7 March 1948 at the Maryknoll Sisters Centre in New York and her final profession on 7 March 1951 in China.
In 1948, Sister Doretta arrived in Wuchow, China to study language for one year and then began her ministry in catechetical work in 1950. The political situation, however, meant she had to transfer to Hong Kong until 1968. 
She returned to the Maryknoll Sisters Centre to earn a Bachelor of Science Degree in Adult Education in 1970 after which she was back in Hong Kong continuing catechetical work until 1977. 
From 1977 to 1980, she was assigned to the Development Department at the Maryknoll Sisters Centre then, in 1980 was back in Hong Kong at St. Stephen’s Church until 1989 when she returned once more to Maryknoll in New York.
Sister Doretta returned to China in 1992; first in Macau until 1995, and then Hong Kong where she did part-time volunteer work visiting the sick and elderly. 
In 2005, she returned to the Maryknoll Sisters Centre, but remained an active, serving as a member of the Pastoral Care Team.
A funeral Mass was celebrated on November 30 and Sister Doretta  was buried in the Maryknoll Sisters Cemetery.
